From the artist: Young Builder, painted in 2002, captures a little girl reaching above her head to place the final piece on her towering block skyscraper…her gaze fixed upward, limited only by imagination, while the cityscape that was surely part of her inspiration reflects the sunset outside her window.
This is an early attempt to capture the unbridled enthusiasm with which children face the world and the idea that the future is something we get to build, block by block, idea by idea.
Two decades later, every rocket, space station, and child exploring beneath the rings of Saturn I paint is another take on the same unbridled optimism I first tried to portray with this aspiring architect.
