In this piece I was attempting to explore the visual impact of light and shadow. One of my most significant artistic influences is the Italian Baroque painter, Caravaggio. I’ve always been mesmerized by his ability to send areas of his paintings deep into shadow, and use light to force the figures to emerge, as if they had been discovered by the viewer. This interplay creates drama, and emotion. I chose to use the symbol of a small sparrow at the upper left, to give companionship to the female figure’s solitude.
