Peering down a long hallway in the French palace of Versailles, I was fascinated with the checkerboard floor. The image of a pale blonde woman sitting on a bright red cloth seemed to create a dramatic graphic image. Truly this painting is more an exercise in composition than anything else. The pale skin of the woman creates a triangular shape with the red cloth serving as a base. The black and white of the checkerboard marble floor contrasts with the red, resulting in a simple primary color based image.
